Thanks for an enjoyable podcast dissecting a film i dearly love despite all its utter silliness. I liked the alternate endings proposed, any of which would have been better than the one they used when Derek Meddings seemingly implored the producers to let him blow absolutely everything up like on Thunderbirds and they couldn’t be arsed to come up with something better. “Yeah, go on then. Make sure you get plenty of coverage though”.
As to quite when the film is set the std Wiki stuff says 2069 but it’s more compatible with 1989 or so, given the tech level and the then-Common-Market’s extrapolated maturity. Raising the money for the half-arsed mission would have been a cinch if EUROSEC had sold off a couple of those swanky properties and/or leased its opulent offices out.
BTW Dr Hassler/Drefyus has an eerie premonition of his later Clouseau-induced tic in his the fact of his camera-eye. And the ‘Sleeping Astronauts’ & truth-serum dreamy sequences seem calculated to cash in on ‘2001’s then-still-warm “Ultimate Trip” renown with the “heads” of the era.
